How You Store Your Boat: Tips for Longevity
Storing your boat properly is essential for its longevity. Exposure to UV light along the hull and moisture on the wood can damage your boat. To protect it, store the boat upside down, off the ground, and with its weight evenly distributed. Ideally, keep it indoors if possible. Let's explore various storage options.
Indoor Storage Solutions

Suspended Storage
Using a pulley system with a high ceiling is a great way to keep your boat out of the way. Alternatively, you can simply suspend your boat using loops of rope. This method prevents moisture buildup and protects your boat from UV exposure.

L-Brackets
Install L-brackets to provide solid support. Make sure the brackets are spaced evenly to distribute the boat's weight effectively. Additionally, check that the support arm is long enough to ensure the boat does not accidentally slide off the ends.
Bike Hook
If you're lucky to have a high ceiling with exposed rafters, consider installing a rubber-coated bike or utility hook. Hang your boat from the thwart or wooden deck to keep it secure and up off the ground.

Saw Horses
A simple set of saw horses can be an effective solution for storing your boat. This method keeps your boat off the ground while allowing for good ventilation.

If you need to store your boat outdoors, choose a shaded spot. Cover it with a thick, durable tarp that you can loosely tie down. This setup will protect your boat while allowing for some airflow. Remember to tie the boat and tarp down separately to protect against strong gusts. Always keep the boat off the ground, especially in snowy areas. Regularly remove snow to prevent damage from excessive weight.
Outdoor Storage Tips

Boat Rack
A self-standing rack is an excellent choice for outdoor storage. Not only does it keep your boat elevated, but it also allows good air circulation around it.

Covered with a Tarp
Using a tarp is one of the best outdoor storage strategies. It offers protection from the sun and harsh weather elements while still allowing airflow. However, make sure that the tarp does not touch the hull, as this can lead to water spots. Set up the tarp at a steep angle to prevent snow from accumulating. Don't forget to strap your boat down, as strong winds can easily toss your boat across the yard.

Shaded Side of a Building
While storing on the shaded side of a building isn’t ideal, it’s certainly better than leaving it completely exposed. Consider investing in a fabric boat cover for an extra layer of protection.
Keep Your Boat Safe!
To deter theft, indoor storage is preferable. However, if you must store your boat outside, ensure it is hidden and securely covered. Use a sturdy cable lock to further protect it.
