Hornbeck Boat Maintenance: Simple Care for a Lifetime of Adventure
When you invest in a Hornbeck, you’re investing in decades of quiet water, remote carries, and unforgettable mornings on the lake. The beauty of a Hornbeck pack canoe is its lightweight performance — and with just a little routine care, your boat can last a lifetime and beyond.
The good news? Maintenance is simple. A few consistent habits will keep your canoe looking sharp and performing exactly the way it was designed to.

Maintenance After Every Day of Paddling
Even a quick rinse goes a long way.
Give It a Bath
After each outing, clean the inside and outside of your canoe with warm soapy water using a cloth, sponge, or soft bristle brush. This:
Prevents pond scum buildup
Reduces staining
Helps stop the spread of invasive species
Removes sand and grit that can dull surfaces
If you’ve paddled in salt water, rinsing is especially important. Salt can dry out wood and tarnish stainless steel hardware if left unrinsed.
Store Away from Sun and Weather
Proper storage has more impact on your canoe’s longevity than any other maintenance step. Keep your Hornbeck out of prolonged direct sunlight and protected from the elements whenever possible.

Maintenance After Paddling Season
At the end of the season, take time to give your canoe a little extra attention before storing it away.
Give It a Thorough Cleaning
Wash the hull inside and out with warm soapy water. Make sure it’s completely dry before long-term storage.
Give It Some Love

Inspect the hull and wood for cracks or areas that may need attention. Addressing small issues early prevents larger repairs later.
Apply 303 Aerospace Protectant to the hull. This helps reduce UV damage, restores shine, and minimizes the appearance of surface scratches.
Sand and oil the wood components to protect against moisture and rot (more on that below).
Maintaining Your Wooden Gunwales

The wooden trim on your Hornbeck is both functional and beautiful. Regular oiling keeps it protected and looking its best.
Step 1: Lightly Sand
Use 100-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the gunwales. This smooths the surface and prepares it for oil absorption. It’s also the perfect time to inspect for any damage.
Step 2: Apply Tung Oil
Using a foam brush or rag, apply a coat of Tung Oil. We recommend a Tung Oil and citrus oil mixture (available in our online store) for easy application and protection.
Step 3: Let It Absorb
Allow the oil to sit for about 15 minutes so it can penetrate the wood. Keep the canoe out of direct sunlight during this process.
Step 4: Wipe Off Excess
Use a rag or paper towel to remove any remaining oil on the surface.
Repeat as Needed
Oil your gunwales at the beginning and end of paddling season. If the wood begins to look dry or weathered, oil more frequently.
The Most Important Factor: Proper Storage
We can’t emphasize this enough — how you store your canoe matters more than anything else.
Keeping your Hornbeck protected from direct sun, moisture buildup, and harsh weather conditions will dramatically extend its lifespan. Proper storage reduces UV damage, prevents warping, and preserves both hull and wood components.

Take care of your boat, and it will carry you into your next adventure — and the one after that.
Hornbeck Boats builds ultralight canoes designed to make wilderness waters simple to reach and effortless to enjoy. Born in the Adirondacks and refined through decades of backcountry use, Hornbeck canoes prioritize ease of carry, intuitive handling, and quiet efficiency over excess features or performance hype.
Our boats are made for paddlers who value access over adrenaline, solitude over spectacle, and time on the water over time wrestling gear. By removing unnecessary weight and complication, Hornbeck opens more days, more lakes, and more years of paddling—especially for solo trippers, older paddlers, and anyone who believes getting to the water should be as enjoyable as being on it.
Hornbeck isn’t about pushing limits. It’s about removing barriers.
