How to Store Your Canoe for Year-Round Protection

As paddlers and builders at Hornbeck Boats, we know your canoe isn’t just gear, it’s your freedom to explore quiet water, reach remote ponds, and move effortlessly across the landscape. Proper storage protects that freedom.

Our lightweight pack canoes are built for performance and longevity, but like any finely crafted boat, they deserve thoughtful care. Whether you paddle year-round or store your canoe between seasons, here’s how we recommend protecting your Hornbeck.

Proper storage is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your boat and preserve its performance on the water.

Choose the Right Location

Store your canoe in a dry, shaded area whenever possible. Prolonged UV exposure can fade finishes and degrade materials over time. A garage, shed, or covered porch is ideal.

Keep It Off the Ground

Even though Hornbeck canoes are lightweight, they should never sit directly on the ground for long periods. Use padded racks, wide straps, or sturdy sawhorses to elevate the boat and support it evenly. This prevents moisture exposure and protects the hull shape.

Use a Breathable Cover

If you’re storing your canoe outdoors or in a dusty space, use a breathable cover. Avoid plastic tarps wrapped tightly around the boat. They trap moisture and can lead to mildew or surface issues.

Clean Before Storage

After each paddling trip, and especially before long-term storage, rinse off dirt, sand, and debris. If you’ve paddled in saltwater, rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Let the canoe dry completely before covering or storing.

Inspect Before You Store

Look over the hull and gunwales for any signs of wear. Addressing small cosmetic issues early prevents larger repairs down the road.

When properly stored, your Hornbeck will remain light, responsive, and ready for your next adventure.

Preparing Your Canoe for Winter Storage

Winter in the Northeast can be unforgiving. Snow loads, freezing temperatures, and fluctuating moisture levels can all affect stored boats if precautions aren’t taken.

Dry It Completely

Before winter storage, ensure the hull and interior are fully dry. Trapped moisture can freeze and expand, which may stress materials over time.

Indoor Storage Is Best

A garage or shed offers the best protection. If indoor storage isn’t possible, store the canoe upside down on well-supported racks and use a secure, breathable cover, and strap down against wind.

Even Support Matters

Hornbeck pack canoes are engineered to be lightweight and efficient. Support them evenly at multiple points along the hull. Avoid resting them on narrow edges or sharp contact points.

Remove Accessories

Store paddles, removable seats, and loose gear separately. This reduces stress on attachment points and keeps your storage space organized.

Check Periodically

If stored outdoors, check occasionally for snow accumulation or cover movement. Clearing excess weight prevents unnecessary strain.

Taking these steps ensures your canoe will be ready when spring thaw calls you back to the water.

Should You Store a Canoe Upside Down?

We’re asked this often — and in most cases, yes.

Bottom-Up (gunwales down) Is Preferred

Storing your canoe upside down prevents water from pooling inside. It also protects the interior from debris and pests.

Use Padded Supports

When storing, Its best that the contact points are wide and padded to prevent dents or pressure marks.

When Right-Side-Up Makes Sense

If indoor space requires right-side-up storage, support the canoe evenly along its length and ensure it’s fully covered and protected from water intrusion.

For outdoor storage especially, upside-down is the safest, simplest approach.

Summer Storage: Keep It Ready Between Paddles

Summer is peak paddling season, but even between outings, proper storage matters.

Keep It in the Shade

Extended UV exposure is the biggest long-term threat to any canoe. Whenever possible, store in shade.

Quick Rinse After Use

A simple rinse removes sand, algae, and grit that can slowly wear on surfaces.

Don’t Leave It Floating

Avoid leaving your canoe in the water unattended for long periods. This can lead to banging against shore or a dock causing cosmetic damage or worse.

Secure It

Our boats are lightweight by design, which makes them easy to car-top and carry, but also important to secure when stored outdoors. A good gust of wind can pick of a light weight canoe and launch it across a lawn or parking lot. Don't set the boat on your car's roof rack without putting at least one strap on it. When taking a lunch break or a quick potty stop, tying it to shore is recommended.

Spring and Fall Transition Tips

Changing seasons are the perfect time to reset your maintenance routine.

Spring Inspection

Before your first paddle of the year, inspect the hull, hardware, and seating. Give it a thorough cleaning and oil the wood. Confirm everything is water-ready.

Fall Prep

Before winter storage, clean thoroughly, dry completely, and remove gear. Another oiling is recommended if you paddled a lot that season. Address any small repairs so you’re not surprised in spring.

Check Your Storage Area

Make sure your storage space stays dry and pest-free. Small environmental issues can become bigger problems over months of inactivity.
