Start early in the morning or paddle in the evening to take advantage of calmer water and lighter boat traffic, as winds can build quickly across the open stretches. Wearing a PFD at all times is especially important here, and keeping an eye on changing weather is key—storms can move in fast. If you’re new to big water, choose shorter routes near the launch or explore protected bays first, building confidence before venturing farther out.
